Highlight of the Week – Bucket List

What is your ZogSports Highlight?

“After a few failed attempts in elementary school and high school (I always quit out of fear of not playing well enough and embarrassing myself), team sports have been on my bucket list.

After a few random pick-up games over the years, I realized if I didn’t organize something and get it on the books I was running from my fear, again. So, I organized a company team and signed up with Zog Sports. Yes, we played our first season and lost, but the team’s enthusiasm and support was inspiring. It was amazing! There was even a cheering section at some games. I went from no goals to goals and assisting and we wrapped up the season awarding every player for something. Everyone cheered for all efforts and improvement.

Well, we signed up for the next season and won the Championship. The whole experience has been pretty amazing. We’ve all met new people, developed discipline on many fronts, and just really had fun. While winning is fun, no matter what we go out there fired up every time and end the night feeling amazing. It’s been a great experience.

Highlight of the Week – A Very Zog Engagement

What is your ZogSports Highlight?

“I started playing Zog volleyball in Hoboken during the Fall season of 2013, Debra and I had been dating for about 9 months. It is likely that watching me play volleyball came a distant 3rd to exploring some of Hoboken’s fine restaurants and getting to see her boyfriend, but Debra dutifully attended many Zog volleyball games. I feel safe in saying that she was the #1 Zog fan. She learned all of my teammates’ names so she could properly cheer for them and learned the volleyball vernacular. Throughout the next four seasons, Debra resumed her status as #1 fan by stepping up her cheer “prop” game. It started out with the Volley Llama poster. She took her creativity to a new level with the Cream of Wheat noise makers. Lastly, but not least, she brought pom-poms for last season’s playoffs. You could say Zog was a big part of our relationship…

So it should come as no surprise that the day I had chosen to propose (Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11th) I also had a volleyball game scheduled in Hoboken. Now I know that Debra is very understanding but I certainly didn’t want to push my luck… I e-mailed my team and told them I couldn’t make it (for only the 2nd time in 2+ years of Zog volleyball). Of course things don’t always go as planned… Our captain e-mailed back and said we only had 4 players coming and 1 of them was limping quite badly. It was the last game of the regular season and we needed a win or 2 to make the playoffs. I told them I would see what I could do…

Nov. 11th arrived and I had everything I needed (parental permission, a shiny ring and the courage to go through with the biggest decision of my life). I’ll spare you the lengthy details but we spent the day together and I made a concerted effort to keep Debra on her toes. Every detour we took she wondered if there was another surprise waiting or if it was just another decoy. We finally made our way onto the pier in Hoboken and I got down on my knee and asked her to marry me. It was 7:45 PM, we were newly engaged and she says to me “Wait, do you really have a volleyball game tonight?!”. It might not be the most romantic thing to do after you get engaged, but the game was at 8 and we hurried across town to the Boys and Girls Club. The first people to hear that we were engaged were my Zog teammates. One of my best friends is also my Zog teammate… two of my Jersey City teammates were on the opposing team that night… Jen the ref has known us for 2+ years and watched our relationship grow.. and of course my Hoboken team is full of new friends. It might sound weird but Debra and I both thought it was very “us” that the 1st people to know about our engagement were our Zog friends. We won the match 2-1 and clinched our playoff spot. The wedding is set for September 24th of this year. It was a great outcome all around.”

Highlight of tonight was that Kills for Kids brought their own Swiffer sweeper for playoffs! It was great!

Highlight of the Week – All About The Glory

What is your ZogSports Highlight?

“We only had 3 players for playoffs, but still wanted to show up and play. We threw down the gauntlet and wanted to play for glory!

So we challenged them to 3v6 and took to the sand. Our toes were numb and we initially went down 0-6. But did we give up? I think not. The three of us dug deep inside and mounted a glorious comeback, winning 21-17.

So… Never give up, even if you don’t have enough players. It’s all about the glory – not the scoresheet. Sandy balls fo’ life.”

You play ZogSports to make new friends, keep playing your favorite sports, give back, and experience a highlight every week.  Now it’s time to meet the people that help deliver those highlights.  Let’s go Behind the Scenes with Field Team Supervisors:

Meet Alex!

Alex Salazar

Alex is a Field Team Supervisor for NYC Volleyball.

Z: How long have you been with ZogSports?

A: Playing since 2007, reffing since fall of 2010

Z: Why do you love working for ZogSports?

A: I love working for ZogSports, because it’s such a cool organization that brings people together from all walks of life.  I’ve made some great friends thanks to Zog.  And the fact that teams play for charity puts us a step over the competition out there that just plays for sport only.

Z: What’s the best team name you’ve come across while working for ZogSports?

A: “Mas Serve Aces” or “Cunning Stunts & Spicy Meats”

Z: Do you have advice for the best pickup line to use at a ZogSports happy hour?

A: Guy to girl: Sorry I spiked the ball in your face.  Can I buy you a drink?

Girl to guy: Sorry not sorry that I blocked your spike.  Now you owe me a drink.

Z: What has been your ZogSports highlight?

A: Having met my fiancé thanks to ZogSports!

Z: Next time you see Alex, ask him to tell you about the time…

A: I had an impacted tooth removed.

Why I Zog – Shafiq’s Story

why i zog logo

We know that ZogSports is the best way to meet new people in New York City, but we love to hear the evidence from first-time Zoggers!  Here’s Shafiq’s story:

Shafiq Orange2

“I moved to NYC a few months back, and my roommate at the time highly recommended ZogSports to me (He also wore many cool colored ZogSports’ t-shirts around the apartment). So being the kind of person who loves to hang out, play sports, and meet new people, I decided to check out the Zog website. Fortunately for me, I found the perfect Sport (Volleyball), on the perfect day (Sunday), in the perfect location (Brooklyn Bridge Park)! Pretty much signed up on the spot.

The first meet was pretty awesome as I got to meet most of the team! We weren’t totally on the same page yet, but going to a happy hour (recommended spot by Zog) after week 1 got us talking and helped create a strong camaraderie. What was really cool is that we started doing all sorts of events around game time from week to week including brunches, sticking around to play more volleyball, and even exploring Brooklyn’s Smorgasburg together! Many of us also hung out together and watched the 4th of July fireworks together thanks to a warm invitation from a teammate! From there we got better every week and learned to communicate on court more effectively!  We even started having some inside jokes (whose got middle?).

This was a phenomenal first time experience, and I made some awesome friends along the way! I plan on trying other Zog sports as well as keeping in touch with current teammates to see what other sports they will be participating in, as well as what they are up to around NYC!

We got playoffs coming up this weekend and hoping to win it all! Go “Orange is the new BLOCK”!”

Highlight of the Week – New Team, New Fun

What is your ZogSports Highlight?

“This summer my regular Zog Team decided to take the season off, but I still wanted to play.  So I helped recruit a new squad – Go Dig or Go Home.  This new team was a mix of players who I’ve met throughout my time playing & reffing with Zog.  While everyone is a good player, we wanted to form a team that put the emphasis on FUN rather than wins and losses. We’re having a blast getting to know each other and learning how to play well together, including experimenting with new formations and plays.  While I still love my other team, this has been a really great experience… you can see how much fun we’re having in all of the pictures!”
