Why I Zog – Shafiq’s Story

why i zog logo

We know that ZogSports is the best way to meet new people in New York City, but we love to hear the evidence from first-time Zoggers!  Here’s Shafiq’s story:

Shafiq Orange2

“I moved to NYC a few months back, and my roommate at the time highly recommended ZogSports to me (He also wore many cool colored ZogSports’ t-shirts around the apartment). So being the kind of person who loves to hang out, play sports, and meet new people, I decided to check out the Zog website. Fortunately for me, I found the perfect Sport (Volleyball), on the perfect day (Sunday), in the perfect location (Brooklyn Bridge Park)! Pretty much signed up on the spot.

The first meet was pretty awesome as I got to meet most of the team! We weren’t totally on the same page yet, but going to a happy hour (recommended spot by Zog) after week 1 got us talking and helped create a strong camaraderie. What was really cool is that we started doing all sorts of events around game time from week to week including brunches, sticking around to play more volleyball, and even exploring Brooklyn’s Smorgasburg together! Many of us also hung out together and watched the 4th of July fireworks together thanks to a warm invitation from a teammate! From there we got better every week and learned to communicate on court more effectively!  We even started having some inside jokes (whose got middle?).

This was a phenomenal first time experience, and I made some awesome friends along the way! I plan on trying other Zog sports as well as keeping in touch with current teammates to see what other sports they will be participating in, as well as what they are up to around NYC!

We got playoffs coming up this weekend and hoping to win it all! Go “Orange is the new BLOCK”!”

Highlight of the Week – New Team, New Fun

What is your ZogSports Highlight?

“This summer my regular Zog Team decided to take the season off, but I still wanted to play.  So I helped recruit a new squad – Go Dig or Go Home.  This new team was a mix of players who I’ve met throughout my time playing & reffing with Zog.  While everyone is a good player, we wanted to form a team that put the emphasis on FUN rather than wins and losses. We’re having a blast getting to know each other and learning how to play well together, including experimenting with new formations and plays.  While I still love my other team, this has been a really great experience… you can see how much fun we’re having in all of the pictures!”

REFlections

People play ZogSports for the organized fun and the friendly competition.  Individuals of all walks of life come out each week with their friends – old and new – to experience the highlight of their week.  As an organization, we are so proud and grateful that we are the ones that get the chance to deliver these highlights.

We are also just as proud that our ZogSports referees are experiencing these same highlights with every shift they work.  It’s not often people say that they love their job, and we feel very fortunate to get to hear those words so frequently from our amazing, hardworking, and super fun staff.

Let’s reflect on one of our referee’s favorite moments as a ZogSports field team member.

“My favorite reffing moment had to be watching Matt from Red Balls & Vodka score a David Beckham like goal opening up the second half kickoff a few years back after asking for proper space. To this day, I have yet to see anyone score from distance to start the game, half, sudden death or change of possession after a goal. Can anyone replicate this feat?” -Steve, Soccer and Football Referee

Highlight of the Week – New Kids on the Block Party

What is your ZogSports Highlight?

There’s a beauty to the Block Party team,
You might recognize it from a distant memory, a dream,
Something you have felt before,
Or read about in ancient lore,
But, believe me, this is something more.

We all registered solo,
And ended up together like Marco Polo,
Fate is what we attribute it to,
More than Zog, more than Mercury, the stars they knew,
To compile this volleyball crew.

What makes us so special you may ask,
To list our exemplary qualities would be an arduous task,
So I will give you a taste,
In case you are in haste,
A little quip of where our love is based.

Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes,
We refined our strategy to gain Ws from the clashes,
Afterwards, there was never a rarity,
Where we flipped and ponged a few drinks for charity,
Building upon our skills of popularity, dexterity and vulgarity.

You’ve seen us in orange, green and now blue,
Dancing and cheering to our custom mixes is part of the view,
From blocks to digs, we know the drill,
And seeing each other week after week is still a thrill,
We even meet in between, just to chill.

It has worked for us, for many seasons,
And we continue to play together for many reasons,
Know you are welcome to partake on this Zog parade,
If you don’t, you will wish you’d have stayed,
For this magical world of friendship and competition I have conveyed.“

ZogSports Makes A Difference – Charity Update Spring 2015

Jpeg

ZogSports was founded in the wake of 9/11, so giving back is a vital element of our organization.  Since our launch in 2002, we’ve donated over $2.7 million to hundreds of different charities.  When you play ZogSports, you’re contributing – we donate 10% of all net proceeds, 100% of Happy Hour bar contributions and 100% of net proceeds from ZSAANYC leagues to charities that you pick.

Last season, in NYC alone, we donated over $36,000 to over 150 different charities.  It’s always amazing to see the tremendous variety of causes that ZogSports teams choose to support, from small, local organizations like The Bronx Defenders to national, well-established charities like the American Heart Association.  Whatever charity your team selects to play for, you can enjoy the friendly competition and organized fun knowing that you’re making a difference somewhere in the world.

Highlight of the Week – Who’s Got Spirit?

What is your ZogSports Highlight?

“I’m the captain of the only kickball team that went completely winless last season. That may sound like a bad title to hold, but I actually couldn’t be happier! My teammates have said that playing those games was some of the most fun they have ever had, and honestly that’s all I want for them. Sure, we try to win, but fun comes first. And we got the Team Spirit award! This season, though, we won our first game! And we have custom shirts! And an instagram account! Follow us @n3rdstnerds for fun action shots and post-game interviews.”
