Playing For Charity

Charity and giving back is a huge component of the ZogSports experience. We have donated over $3 million on behalf of our teams. Every team selects a charity before the season that they are playing for. At the end of the season, we donate 10% of net proceeds, 100% of Happy Hour bar contributions, and an allocation from our sponsors to a charity pool, divvied up among the winning teams.

Charities that have received donations from ZogSports in the past include Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, ASPCA, American Cancer Society, Boomer Esiason Foundation, St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and Make-a-Wish Foundation of America. Over the next few months, we will be highlighting our players stories behind why they chose these causes and how they are special to them.

A ZogSports Proposal

ZogSports’ Mission: Bring People Together, Create Highlights, Make a Difference.

Thousands of people join ZogSports every season to keep playing and make new friends.  Often, these new friendships blossom into beautiful relationships.

Andrew met Marisa in a ZogSports Basketball league five years ago.  This month, Andrew came to us and asked if we could help him plan his proposal to Marisa at that very same gym where they first met.  Here is their story:

Marisa and I met playing in a casual coed basketball league a little over five years ago.  I moved to NY after college so I thought it might be a good way to meet people.  Our team didn’t win that many games but it didn’t matter, we ended up bonding over how terrible our team was.  I started emailing Marisa separately and she invited me to join her ZogSports football team.  We started dating a few months later and we’ve been playing with the same football team for 5 years now.

[For the proposal] I wanted to do something that would surprise her and something that would take her back to when we first met.  Earlier that night after I asked her to sub for my friend’s volleyball team.  [When we walked in] she said to me, “Hey – Isn’t this the gym where we first met?”  It was perfect.  I could tell by her reaction when she walked into the gym that she had no idea it was going to happen.

People who join ZogSports are generally looking to meet people and have fun.  It helps to meet someone while doing something you love, like playing sports, because you know right away that you have shared interests.  I know a few couples who have met through ZogSports and I don’t think I ever would have met Marisa if it weren’t for ZogSports! img_7765

We couldn’t be happier for Andrew and Marisa.  Congratulations!

Highlight of the Week – Our Squad is Family

What is your ZogSports Highlight?

“We’re the Splash Brothers of North Jersey and this shot is from when we won the championship in the South Orange summer league. This is our third championship (in a row, if you don’t count the spring season, which only part of our team played). One of our teammates badly broke her ankle this summer, so this win was for Stacey. Our team formed two years ago, and although not everybody plays every season, the majority of our players are alumni from Montclair High School spanning 9+ years. Our charity is Montclair PAL, which runs Montclair’s rec basketball program for middle school boys and girls (which some of us have played or coached in). All of us are former HS and college athletes, and it’s an awesome feeling to play on a team together. Our squad is family!”

Highlight of the Week – Father and Son

What is your ZogSports Highlight?

This week’s highlight comes from a father/son ZogSports reffing duo in Los Angeles:

“Big Daddy Kane” BDK (father):

Ever since I joined ZogsportsLA, life is fun, playing sports is extremely enjoyable and being a field team member is AMAZING. I’ve come across some amazing people, I’ve reffed some awesome games and I’ve made lots of new friends. I enjoy every minute of every game i referee, I make sure EVERY player feels the energy I bring!! I love to spice things up, I like to bring joy and good sportsmanship to every game. Zogsports is the best coed league I’ve come across.

Diego (son):

It’s a ton of fun reffing for ZogSports! Whether it’s hanging with others or watching an insane play happen, I’m glad to be a part of every game. I’ve been a part of the team for more than a year, however I’m still continuously improving and learning with every game. I hope to be a part of it for much longer so I can have even more fun!

Highlight of the Week – Highlight Tapes

What is your ZogSports Highlight?

“It started off with me and a buddy just trying to get into a healthier life style but quickly became the best part of my week. Every week as soon as the game ended I couldn’t wait to get back out there next week. I enjoyed it so much I even started making my own highlight tapes. Granted I may not be the best player but I made sure the highlight tape made it look like I was. The thrill of the competition was amazing and I thought it couldn’t get any sweeter, but somehow it did. After trying to win a championship for 5 plus seasons it finally came! Now my highlight of the week is defending this 2x time back to back Zog Championship soon to be 3x times! Keep a look out for Curry Up and Shoot!

Check out their highlight tape here!

Highlight of the Week – Bucket List

What is your ZogSports Highlight?

“After a few failed attempts in elementary school and high school (I always quit out of fear of not playing well enough and embarrassing myself), team sports have been on my bucket list.

After a few random pick-up games over the years, I realized if I didn’t organize something and get it on the books I was running from my fear, again. So, I organized a company team and signed up with Zog Sports. Yes, we played our first season and lost, but the team’s enthusiasm and support was inspiring. It was amazing! There was even a cheering section at some games. I went from no goals to goals and assisting and we wrapped up the season awarding every player for something. Everyone cheered for all efforts and improvement.

Well, we signed up for the next season and won the Championship. The whole experience has been pretty amazing. We’ve all met new people, developed discipline on many fronts, and just really had fun. While winning is fun, no matter what we go out there fired up every time and end the night feeling amazing. It’s been a great experience.

Highlight of the Week – A Family Affair

What is your ZogSports Highlight?

“With the help of Netflix and whoever is on our bench during our games, we’re able to make coed basketball a whole family affair! We’ve never been able to play on the same basketball team together and Zog has provided a fun atmosphere for us and our kids at the court. The girls will cheerlead and we have found that extra something to spice up our week to stay active. The refs even play with our kids on timeouts and after our game. The coed basketball has become our second community and we can’t wait to play each and every season!”

Where Has Your Zog T-Shirt Been?

There are new Zoggers, there are loyal Zoggers, and then there are die hard Zoggers.  Meet Jonathan, who doesn’t leave for a vacation without packing a ZogSports T-shirt for each day of his trip.

IMG_0410

As the cold weather comes around, I think back to the nice summer weather and times on vacation, with my ZogSports Shirts!!!!

When I got home from college four years ago, my brother asked me to play dodgeball with him in the city.  I immediately said yes just out of my enjoyment of playing sports and competitive nature.  We did not do well that year, I think we only won one game but I had a lot of fun and got a bright pink T-shirt.  The next year we decided to play again.  This year was a little different, I got a yellow T-shirt and we won the championship.  I decided that the yellow shirt was more special than the pink shirt, so I got rid of the pink one.  Over the next few years I continued to play Zog dodgeball, but also added in kickball and basketball.  As the number of sports I played for Zog increased, so did my number of Zog t-shirts.  I was unsure what I should do with them all since they took up a whole pile in my drawer.  My brother even added a Zog ref shirt to my collection [as a holiday gift one year] that he found at the Salvation Army (because I loved getting to ref during dodgeball games).IMG_1069

While I was packing for a family vacation to the beach, I realized I needed shirts to wear on the beach.  And what would be better than a wide range of brightly colored Zog shirts?  I packed a different color for each day I was going to be at the beach.  Each day I would walk out with a different shirt and people would ask what sport that shirt was from.

These ZogSports shirts have now become my favorite vacation shirt.  I plan on continuing to play Zog for the enjoyment of playing sports and to add to my shirt collection.  So far my shirts have made it to Jersey, Cape Cod, and Florida.  Next summer I will be adding to the list.  Where has your Zog T-shirt been?

Thanks for sharing your story with us, Jonathan.  We’d be happy to add to your collection if you’re missing any colors.
