Summer Bucket List

They say nothing compares to New York City in fall… but I think we can all agree: summer in New York is in a league of its own. When the weather is this nice, you can easily take advantage of all New York has to offer. People are relaxed, tanned, active, and happy. It’s prime time for meeting new people, starting a fling, and making memories with old friends. Here are our top picks for your summer. Go alone, bring a friend, or meet a new one – no matter what, these experiences will be ones to remember.

1) See an outdoor movie

1

Bryant Park, the Hudson River, and Washington Square Park are just a few of the venues that offer free outdoor screenings of classics all summer long. Some of NYC’s famous and beautiful rooftops also offer movie screenings for a small price.

PERFECT FOR: a first date

2) Beach Volleyball on the pier

NE2A5246-1.jpg

Dear Brooklyn Bridge Park, we love you. Never change. Xoxo, ZogSports. Seriously, with the most stunning views of Manhattan you’ll find – this waterfront park sets a perfect backdrop for your beach volleyball games. We know, we know… the one thing New Jersey has on us is their beaches. How many times have you heard a friend complain that there’s just “not enough green” here in the city? Lay that notion to rest. Come play with us this season! With sand, sun, water, and greenery all around you – you’ll feel like you’ve left New York without actually having to do so.

PERFECT FOR: getting a tan

3) Rooftop Bars

3.jpg

Even if you do take a trip out of NY this summer – you KNOW you can’t stay away for long. No other city in the world has rooftop bars like ours. It’s rooftop season, and you should take advantage! Some of New York’s best even offer pool access. The ones that don’t still offer stellar views. If you’re trying to give your hometown friends FOMO, this is your chance. Sip on a delicious drink and get some shots of that skyline. You can go back to your favorite indoor bar in October. For now – have an affair with something that looks like this ^^

PERFECT FOR: an Instagram photo

4) Smorgasburg

4.jpg

Not everyone likes to drink. Some of us prefer FOOD. Head on down to the seaport district for your choice of the best NYC’s food vendors have to offer. Lobster rolls, gourmet doughnuts, ice cream sandwiches, and the famous Ramen Burger are all available here. Take your time browsing this flea market for food. And don’t forget to stock up – Smorgasburg is only around for a few short months!

PERFECT FOR: an outing with friends

5) Cornhole

5.jpg

Unfortunately, now that we’re all “adults” or whatever – we don’t get to take the summer off. Work happens year round and vacations are short! To keep your sanity, and to reconnect with your childhood – play cornhole! This low key game keeps it casual and fun. Your remedy for a hard day at work – come have fun with us and forget all about it. Make a new friend. Maybe even meet a new boyfriend or girlfriend so your parents can finally stop nagging you about it. How nice does that sound?

PERFECT FOR: remedying a long day at the office

6) Happy Hour

6

We take fun seriously and think you should, too! You’ve been cooped up, working hard all winter. Now’s the time to let loose, explore, and go outside your comfort zone. Everyone has their “regular” bar. But let’s be real – at your regular bar, you meet all the same old regular people, order the regular drink, and have the regular night. Time for you to try someplace new! Lucky for you, here at Zog, we introduce you to some new bars in the city at our post-game happy hours.

PERFECT FOR: the type of night they write songs about

7) Coney Island Boardwalk

7.jpg

Ferris wheels, fireworks, corndogs, and the beach? This is like your childhood dream of what Summer looked like. Is it really summer unless you eat a Popsicle on a boardwalk? You don’t have to venture too far. While the Jersey shore, Rhode Island, and Cape Cod are all viable options, Coney Island is a mere subway ride away. Bring your significant other and enjoy that magical carnival date she’s been secretly dying for you to take her on. I mean, really, haven’t you ever seen the Notebook?

PERFECT FOR: people watching

8) The Prospect Park Fireworks Show

8

Show a little love to Brooklyn. Especially on July 4th. Manhattan has its own go-to spots for seeing the show – but ditch them. No other place in New York will give you the same experience. On a night like July 4th, Manhattan is a crowded mess. Similar to New Year’s Eve, there are so many options for things to do – it can be overwhelming and sort of a letdown. Skip all that and bring your squad to Prospect Park. The Fireworks show here is unrivaled and with a surprisingly manageable crowd. If you’re into taking photos – no other venue will give you the same quality of pictures! If you don’t believe us – just check Instagram.

PERFECT FOR: a great night with friends

9) Central Park New York Philharmonic

9.jpg

Speaking of fireworks – the Central Park New York Philharmonic show is an unmissable event this summer. Each year, the shows end with fireworks against the Manhattan skyline. But don’t come just for the sparks – come for the music! Tickets for the NYPhil are normally pretty high – this free event gives you the same experience for nothing at all. The most talented instrumentalists of New York come together to give you an incredible show. Bring a blanket and some wine, and have a great night.

PERFECT FOR: impressing your friend who’s into classical music and discussing politics

10) Throw an End-Of-Summer party with all your ZogSports friends!

10.jpg

As summer comes to an end – you’re sure to have a whole new group of friends joining your squad and being a part of your life. Celebrate your friendship! Get together, take over someone’s apartment or house – and throw a banger to send off summer. Make sure Kanye is bumping on the playlist. He may not be coming back to New York for a while….

PERFECT FOR: turning acquaintances into BFFs

Get in the Game: Mind, Body, and Sport (Your Social Skills)

We all know that ZogSports lets you keep playing all your favorite sports you grew up playing, allows you to try something new, expands your social network, and gives you something to look forward to every week.  But did you know that ZogSports is actually healthy for you?  Mentally, physically and socially?  Expert psychotherapist, Alyson Cohen, LCSW, explains why:

Get in the Game: Mind, Body, and Sport (Your Social Skills)

Have you ever thought about joining a social sports league in New York City? Well, you should. My clients are always looking for ways to make friends in Manhattan, build their professional networks, and find time to stay in shape. Joining a social sports league is a great way to strengthen your mental, physical, and social well-being.

Here are some key reasons why:

1- Physical activity reduces depression. It will physically make you feel happier. Exerting your body to get your blood flowing directly causes serotonin levels in your body to increase. Serotonin is the “feel good” neurotransmitter (brain signal) that when released, gives you feelings of carefree lightheartedness. This is the same effect as antidepressant medications, but you can get it without those pills! In addition to releasing serotonin, having a planned sports activity will give you more motivation to leave your home, thus reducing isolation and forcing you to flex your social muscles.

2- You will improve your physical health. Let’s face it, you’re not as young as you used to be. And when you’re a kid it’s easy to stay fit; you have recess, gym class, and energy levels that keep you bouncing off the walls. Now you’re an adult. You work in an office; you need a change of pace – literally. Step. It. Up. Joining a social sports league will give you the encouragement and boost needed to add fitness to your life. It’s  got potential to be way more fun than a gym and with all the distraction of your new friends, you’ll hardly realize you’re burning calories. Lifting weights and running on a treadmill isn’t for everyone,  but throwing balls at each other and running bases has definitely been fun for you at some point in time. Your inner kid is still in there and will give you all the energy you need once you find something fun to do!

3- You will make friends and build your social skills. So maybe you are new to the city and you literally know nobody. You’re not alone. Thousands of other people have just moved here too and they’re probably going to join some sort of activity to make friends. And it’s okay and a totally normal thing to do in a city as big as New York. The best part about meeting people through a social sports league is they want to be your friend! They want to hang out with you, get to know you, and have fun. It’s a win-win (even if your team continually loses). If you’re an introvert and have trouble talking to strangers, you don’t have to! Just focus on your game play until you’re ready to take that next step. Chances are that it’s only social anxiety holding you back but once you have upped your body’s blood flow, you’ll likely feel more at ease and better able to interact with your teammates.

4- Your professional network will expand. Lucky for you, the other members of your team are not professional athletes, however they are professional somethings. And maybe they work in an industry that could directly benefit your career (another win-win). Networking in New York City can be costly, time-consuming, and just flat out boring. Networking through a social sports league keeps interactions laid back, genuine and  could promote a higher quality relationship. The more diverse networking avenues you pursue, the more diverse professionals you will meet. It’s a simple formula and you will find it’s very possible to have fun and network at the same time!

5- Your self-esteem will improve. Participating in an activity that you enjoy will make you feel good about yourself. Even if you were the last kid to be picked on the team in gym class, now’s your chance for redemption. Generally, the level of play in social sports leagues is pretty non-competitive. Knowing that you took the big step of putting yourself out there, trying to meet new people, and putting effort into a new activity will make you feel proud of yourself. And you should be.

If you’re feeling like you could use a boost mentally, physically, socially and professionally, why not give joining a social sports league a try? The only thing you’ve got to lose is depression, weight, social anxiety, and job isolation.

“What do you do when you don’t play but want to hang with your coolest friends?   Lead the fans in some great battle cries!  EE CHEE WA MAA!! (yes, ewokese exists!)  And it’s that kind of spirit that I feel carried my favorite team, Ewoks Him Again, to the win! DANGAR!!

“After pulling off a win in the last game of a dismal regular season our team was lucky to go into the playoffs as the 4th seed.  We had nothing to lose, seeing as how we had lost to all the other seeded teams, so we came out loose and looking to have fun. All the pieces of the puzzle seemed to fit perfectly that night, including some lucky breaks.  We beat the top seeded team by 2 scores, carried the momentum into the Championship game and didn’t look back. After years of coming up short in the Top Division, we finally did it!!!  Shout out to our playoff MVP’s Lauren Downey and Greg White!”

Highlight of the Week – Legends of the Hidden Zoggers

What is your ZogSports Highlight?

When I got the email this spring asking if I wanted to sign up for a Cornell alumni kickball team, I only joined with one other person. Even though it turns out I was correct in suspecting there were not enough alumni in Philly to fill a full team, our team of mishmash alumni are about to join together this fall for our third season! I love coming out every week to have some fun on the field and at the bar with a great group of new friends who have a true appreciation for 90s Nickelodeon game shows and accompanying 90s walk-up songs.”
